PVL Mag/CDI Ignition System

It starts with a aluminum block off plate to
seal the left side of the crankcase. A seal carrier and seal are installed in the center
hole. Plate is my own design. I have them made in batches of ten. $60 will get you one. With seal carrier and seal included. |

The basic components of a PVL Mag/CDI ignition system. Here you see the rotor, the coil (bottom left), CDI unit (bottom right), stator winding (top center). Rotor puller is in the background. |

PVL mounting plate showing how it is attached to
the inside of the left crankcase cover. The rectangular shaped nuts are home made, they are this shape so they can be loosened or tightened from the outside without have to get to the inside of the cover. As the bolt is turned from the outside the nut will rotate and contact the cover and stop turning. This allows the timing to be adjusted from the outside by just loosening two bolts. |

Stator winding is mounted to the back side of
the mounting plate. I make these plates myself...quite a pain in the butt too. They allow
timing adjustment between about 30 degrees and 55 degrees BTDC. The three holes you see are tapped and they used to both hold the plate in place on the engine cover and to mount the round outer access cover. |

The rotor and stator winding installed. Numerous
modifications must be made to the left crankcase cover to install these parts. Rotor must
have a proper "taper" turned on the inside to fit the 175 crankshaft. The two socket head bolts shown here are the ones with the rectangular nuts on the back. Again you see the three holes for mounting the outer cover. When you mount the outer cover and draw it tight..it also pulls the plate against the engine cover making it's position very secure. |
