Race 1 NHIS May 2001 In the pits at Loudon (NHIS) in May. Bike ran poorly but good enough to take a second place. Competition was sparse and Mary was able to ride around the bikes problems well enough to capture second place. We were still having big problems with the bike power band, it was only wanting to make power above about 9k rpm and then still had some kind of misfire above 11k rpm. The bike was being extremely difficult to tune properly and it seemed no matter what jetting we used it was still running poorly. Even though we got a second place I was very disappointed in the bike performance. |

Mary (in brown leathers with black helmet) lined up at the wall with some of the other 50cc riders waiting for the "Lemans Start" sometime called for by the USCRA. One rider even has an "Umbrella Girl" to keep the sun off of him. |

Race 2 (Gunstock) and Race 3 (NHIS) June 01. Gunstock and NHIS Mary with her Trophy for 1st in Class, Third overal in the USCRA/FIM Vintage 50cc Championship race. As you might guess we have gotten the bike sorted. We were puzzled after our poor performance at NHIS in May so we took a fresh look at the bike. It seemed most of our problem started when we installed the Ray Sumner Megaphone. It made tremendous power at certain rpms but was not producing the power at low rpms that we needed. Something about the design of the pipe did not work well with the modifications we have made to our motor. It had become almost impossible to jet the carb to run acceptably in a wide enough rpm band to be successful on the race track.. Since we were warned once at the race track about the noise of the bike we decided to take a chance and add a baffle to the exhaust system. We modified the system using a "SuperTrapp" baffle system and the results were amazing. Mary went on to when her race at Gunstock (does not count toward USCRA championship points) and then also win her FIM vintage race at NHIS for which she received a very nice trophy and points toward the championship. However Gunstock is consider and "exhibition" race so Mary did not push the bike very hard. The FIM vintage race the following day at NHIS was a wet race so once again Mary did not push the bike very hard..... hard enough to win her class each time but we still didn't know just how well the bike was running. |
