2001 Season 20mm Keihin Carb       Back to Carb Section

Carb-20mm-mounted-10-02-1.jpg (22786 bytes) 20mm Keihin race carb mounted on the engine with K&N air filter. This carb has worked great for the 2002 season.   Now using a #88 main jet,
#40 pilot jet,
clip at lowest position.
keihin20mm.jpg (14190 bytes) Here is the carb set up I will be using for the 2001 race season. It's a 20mm Keihin PE carb, spigot mount adapted to a modified Takegawa intake manifold. The carb was purchased from Pro-Flo for about $70 US.

Main jet #90
Pilot jet #40
Needle clip in the lowest position (full rich position)

This setup works well with a Super Trapp exhaust (16 disk installed)- 3/4" head pipe, Flowed head, Takegawa Fast Street Cam, Kitaco CDI ignition, race fuel. Expect very little power below 5k rpm, max power around 12k rpm.

keihin20mm-2.jpg (23370 bytes) Here are the components. As you can see the carb mounting flange was removed from the Takegawa intake manifold and the opening as matched to the spigot mount of the carb for a nice smooth flowing air stream. 1 1/4 inche ID. rubber hose and two hose clamps will serve to mount the carb to the intake. I'll probably safety wire the carb to the intake manifold bolts also.
keihin20mm-3.jpg (20291 bytes) Side by side photo of the 20mm Keihin on the left and the 18mm Keihin on the right. The 18mm is an "old" style that came off an early 70's CB175. The two carbs are different in many respects. The new 20mm has a screw on float bowl with access to the low speed and main jet through a large plug on the bottom of the bowl. Note the much larger air funnel on the 20mm. The 20mm uses an enrichment device instead of the choke plate found on the 18mm. The 20mm has an easy to use idle speed adjustment complete with small knob. The 20mm is sold for "racing use only" and appears to be superior in most respects. It has a circular bore instead of the oval type found on older Keihins which should make it much easier to bore to a larger size if needed.
