Details of Rear Shock Mounts

shock-mount-1.JPG (6990 bytes) Detail of the outside of the top right shock mount. The mount is made up of 18 gauge steel sheet bent into a deep "U" shape with a 3/8" radius on the bottom side. Rear of of "U" is also enclosed for strength. Stud was fashioned from a 12mm grade 8.8 bolt that was passed through both sides of box section mount and welded into place
shock-mount-4.JPG (7094 bytes) Here you see the inside of the left upper mount showing once again the boxed rear portion of the mount and the "plug" weld on the inside of the shock mounting stud.
shock-mount-2.JPG (6560 bytes) This shows the lower right shock mount. Fashioned from 1/8" x 1" band steel. I first bent an upside down "U" shape with a 1/2" dia radius, I attached two 2.5" uprights drilled to accept the lower shock mounting bolt. The upside down "U" creates a saddle that fits nicely onto the swingarm tube. I considered more conventional designs using a section of thick plate welded to the swingarm tube and drilled for the shock bolt but I feel this would have distorted the tube excessively and probably would have weighed more.
shocks-1.JPG (23547 bytes) Showing the mounted shocks. This is an updated picture showing the second set of shocks. The first set was extremely stiff, this set is just very stiff. Still too stiff for this bike but at least these have replaceable springs and decent dampers. I think they are SW (?) units, anybody out there know for sure? Know where I can find new springs for these or new damper units? Email me if you do.
